Matt and I have been picking our favorite whiskeys of the month for the past twelve months. Most are whiskeys that have been sent to me for review, and we have picked our favorite whiskey from these candidates. The whiskeys are as follows:
January: Old McBrayer Bottled-in-Bond
February: Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye
March: Leiper’s Fork Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
April: Michter’s Barrel Proof Rye 2022 Release
May: W.H. McBrayer Batch Two Bourbon
June: Neeley Family Single Barrel Bourbon
July: Dickel / Leopold Brothers Collaboration Rye
August: Wilderness Trail 8 Year Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
September: Rare Character ADHD Single Barrel Rye
October: Michter’s Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey
November: Leiper’s Fork Single Barrel Rye
December: Wollersheim Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
Any of these whiskeys could be our favorite whiskey on any given day of the week – that is the ephemeral nature of tasting whiskey! That is also why we decided to make our individual picks for our favorite of the year. Matt likes a spicy whiskey and I like a fruity whiskey. Rosemary likes Michter’s whiskey. We set up a blind tasting of the six whiskeys we decided were our most likely winners. Rosemary poured samples from the six bottles and these are our winners.
I liked the Leiper’s Fork Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. It has a nice dark fruity aroma and taste that I really like. It was a hard choice for me between the Leiper’s Fork Bourbon and the Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye.
Matt liked the Wilderness Trail 8 Year Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. It has the spicy flavor he loves. He was torn between the Wilderness Trail and the Rare Character ADHD Rye.
Rosemary liked the Michter’s Toasted Barrel Sour Mash. It has the rich caramel candy flavor she loves in a whiskey. She also loved the Michter’s Barrel Proof Rye.These are our favorite whiskeys from the past year. If Matt and I did the blind tasting again, the results could be different. All twelve of these whiskeys are excellent and are worthy of the title of “Whiskey of the Year for 2022.”
