I have already reviewed the Trackside Bourbon, but that was the first version of the whiskey. What we are reviewing here is a second expression with a railroad trackside image on the label. This image is the only difference in the label from the first expression so it can be confusing, thus I am calling it “Railroad” to distinguish between the two expressions. This is a different whiskey from the first expression. The original Trackside was a four grain Bourbon using chocolate malt as the fourth grain. This is a high rye Bourbon with a mash bill of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. I recently picked up a bottle of this second expression of Trackside on a visit to Kentucky Artisan Distillery and Matt and I sat down to taste it. Here are our tasting notes.

Trackside (Railroad) Bourbon

Proof: 88

Age: Four Years Old

Nose:

  • Mike: Vanilla, corn, peaches, baking spice and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, grapes, blackberries, orange zest, leather and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Vanilla, peach, orange zest, allspice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and apple and ginger come forward. Tasted with a pecan and the flavor is caramel, orange zest, cinnamon and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, blackberry, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry enhanced the oak wood. The pecan brought out a note of malted milk balls.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak wood, orange zest and allspice. The dried cranberry added apple and ginger to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with oak wood and cinnamon.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and nutmeg. The dried cranberry added lingering caramel. The pecan added lingering blackberry.

I would pair this Bourbon with a My Father Le Opulencia cigar. I think the vanilla and dried fruit in the smoke would pair well with the sweetness of the whiskey.
