Rosemary saw on social media that this Frank August Bourbon won an award at San Francisco and thought we should have a bottle, so she ordered one for Matt as a Christmas gift. We sat down and tasted this wheat recipe Bourbon the other day and here are our tasting notes.

Frank August Case Study 05; Wheated Reserve 5 Barrel Batch

Proof: 104.5

Age: No Age Statement (Their website states it is a blend of six- and seven-year old Kentucky Straight Bourbons)

Nose:

  • Mike: Vanilla, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, cereal grains, raisins, lilac and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Vanilla, apples, cinnamon and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and black pepper comes out in the taste. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla becomes caramel.
  • Matt: Caramel, raisins, burnt orange, ginger and oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out orange zest and enhanced the caramel. The pecan brought out notes of chocolate.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak wood and vanilla. The dried cranberry added black pepper to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and sweet with oak wood and caramel.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood, leather and ginger. The dried cranberry added a citrus note to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and sweet with oak wood, caramel and raisins.

I would pair this Bourbon with a My Father Blue cigar. There is a dried fruit note in the smoke with vanilla and tobacco that would pair well with the sweetness of the Bourbon.
