Brother’s Bond is a whiskey company founded by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. They are the latest actors that have wanted to get into the whiskey industry. Their whiskeys are good whiskeys, so it is more than a prestige whiskey company. They are sourcing their whiskey, but they have good enough palates that they have picked decent whiskeys for their brand. They sent me some of their bottles to review and Matt and I sat down and tasted them. Here are our tasting notes.
Brother’s Bond Four Grain Bourbon

Brother’s Bond American Blended Rye
Proof: 95

- Mike: Rye grass, caramel, wild berries, and oak.
- Matt: Rye grass, orange zest, vanilla and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Rye grass, vanilla, raspberries, white pepper and oak wood. The dried cranberry enhanced the pepper spice. The pecan brought out lemon zest and cinnamon.
- Matt: Rye grass, vanilla, orange zest, cardamom and oak wood. The dried cranberry made the orange taste of orange sherbet. The pecan added caramel to the mix.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak and white pepper. The dried cranberry added some lingering raspberry to the finish. The pecan made the finish longer with oak and lemon zest.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and cardamom. The dried cranberry added rye grass and lingering orange sherbet. The pecan made the finish long with oak, rye and lingering orange zest.
I would pair these whiskeys with a cigar that has lots of vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a NUB Habano cigar.

I get why actors (and the like) choose whiskey as a diversification vehicle (a choice they may soon regret), but what I don’t get is the rationale behind showcasing your flagship product at 80 proof? 80 proof whiskies are crafted for people trying to forget their problems, not enthusiasts.

Ryan,
It is Ian Somerhalder here and thank you so much for your comment. I totally hear you, however, Brothers bond is for everyone. Our Flagship 80 proof is delicious and recognized for being delicious. What we got to do was opened up the entire category to drinkers and who would never have thought about bourbon. As enthusiast you probably don’t want flagship anyway. That’s why we have our award winning RYE, Our cask strength (Multiple Double Gold Awards in SF&NY), our bottled and bond is 98 points double gold, and a finalist for best in class in San Francisco.
We have incredible things also coming down the pipeline. I hope you get a chance to check out some of these exceptional whiskeys that are made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. I’m happy to send you some!
Thanks for your time,
Ian Somerhalder

Thanks for the thoughtful reply to my somewhat cheeky comment. I just think craft NDPs are expected to deliver more than just the bare minimum (even for their entry-level products).

You are not thinking about the overseas market. They prefer an 80 proof whiskey.
