Rosemary and I love going to Michter’s The Bar at Fort Nelson. It is our favorite cocktail bar in Louisville. They have a very talented staff that create excellent cocktails. The other day we celebrated Repeal Day with a trip to the Fort Nelson and were happy to see that they have a special Holiday Cocktail menu. We had our friends John and Carlene Slucher with us and we decided upon our cocktails. Carlene and I both liked the sound of the “Some Like It Hot” cocktail. It was a fairly cold evening and a hot drink sounded good. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Bourbon, Yellow Chartreuse, Lemon, Honey, Demerara, Creole Bitters and served hot. It was garnished with a huge twist of lemon zest. It was basically a cross between a hot toddy and a lemon crusta cocktail. It was very good.

Rosemary and John both ordered the Nine to Five Cocktail. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Rye, Chocolate Faretti, Foro Amaro, Coffee, Branca Menta, and Chocolate Bitters. It was also a very good cocktail with just the right amount of coffee and chocolate. It was garnished with a slice of lemon zest. John and I decided we wanted a second cocktail so we each ordered a Jasper and Jinx cocktail – a twist on the Tom and Jerry and served hot. It was made with Michter’s US 1 Bourbon, Shenk’s  Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash, Tom and Jerry Mix, Foro Amaro, Milk, Pumpkin Spice, Allspice, and Cinnamon and served hot. It was excellent with just the right amount of pumpkin spice where you got a hint of the spice, but it did not dominate the cocktail. I think that it was our favorite cocktail of the evening.

The menu has two other cocktails on it which we did not try that evening. The first was Up To Snow Good made with Farmer’s Gin, Cream, Crème de Menthe, Orgeat, and Absinthe. The last cocktail on the menu was Santa;s Little Helper made with Chocolate Faretti and Branca Menta.  Both sounded good, but we chose not to try them as we had a dinner reservation at Repeal and did not have time to appreciate them.

I highly recommend that you stop in for a cocktail at The Bar at Fort Nelson if you are ever in Louisville. The cocktails are always very tasty and well presented. The service is excellent and the Barrel Strength Michter’s Rye Manhattan is my all-time favorite Manhattan cocktail and you can get one at any time of the year.
