This whiskey is a product of Big Bat Bourbon, the Bourbon bottler located at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory on Main Street. They source their whiskey barrels and finish them with different woods. This bottle has whiskey that was finished with 200 year old oak, maple and cherry wood. They have created an interesting flavor profile with these woods and Matt and I sat down to taste the whiskey the other day. Here are our tasting notes.
J. Frederick Three Wood Bourbon
Proof: 100.6
Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, maple, cherry, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, dates, allspice and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, maple, cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry enhanced the vanilla and cherry flavors. Tasted with a pecan brought out caramel sweetness and pepper spice.
- Matt: Vanilla, chocolate, dates, allspice and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a note of apple flavor. The pecan gave it the flavor of a caramel apple with cinnamon spice.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, cherry fruit and cinnamon spice. The dried cranberry made the finish shorter and sweeter with oak wood and lots of vanilla. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood and lingering caramel.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and allspice. The dried cranberry made the finish shorter with oak and cinnamon. The pecan made the finish long with oak and lingering caramel.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has rich vanilla and dried fruit in the smoke. I would reach for a Don Pepin Garcia cigar.
