The other day, Matt and I attended the cigar event at Heaven Hill Distillery and I picked up a bottle of the Bernheim Barrel Proof Wheat Whiskey. Matt and I sat down and tasted it and here are our tasting notes.

Bernheim Barrel Proof Wheat Whiskey

Proof: 125.4

Age: Seven years old (with some nine year old whiskey)

Nose:

  • Mike: Vanilla, apples, pepper spice and oak wood.
  • Matt:  Caramel, brown sugar, orange blossoms and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Vanilla, ripe apples, white pepper and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the wood tannins and leather come forward. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla becomes a rich caramel and the spice becomes a black pepper.
  • Matt: Caramel, peanuts, buttered corn and oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out wild berry fruit and enhanced the oak tannins. The pecan made the taste a rich caramel with peanut butter and dates with oak wood.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak and pepper. The dried cranberry made the finish longer and dried with lots of oak tannins. The pecan Made the finish long and dry with oak wood and black pepper.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and peanuts. The dried cranberry made the finish long with oak wood and caramel. The pecan made the finish very long with oak wood, dates and lingering caramel.

I would pair this whiskey with a NUB Maduro cigar. I think the vanilla and rich tobacco in the smoke would pair well with the vanilla and spice of the whiskey.
