Reservoir Distillery is in Richmond, Virginia. It was founded by Dave Cuttino and has Mary Allison as their Head Distiller. They have sent me a sample bottle of their Rye whiskey, a 100% rye whiskey. Matt and I sat down to taste it the other day and here are our tasting notes.

Reservoir Rye

Proof: 100

Age: No Age Statement

Nose:

  • Mike: Rye grass, chocolate, baking spices and oak wood.
  • Matt: Vanilla, brown sugar and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Rye grass, chocolate, allspice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the spice becomes cinnamon. Tasted with a pecan and a rich French vanilla comes forward to join the party.
  • Matt: Vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a citrus note to the flavor. The pecan brought out rye grass, chocolate, burnt peanuts and oak wood.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak wood, allspice and lingering chocolate. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with more chocolate. The pecan made the finish very long with oak wood, chocolate and lingering French vanilla.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and brown sugar. The dried cranberry added cinnamon to the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood and burnt peanuts.

I would pair this rye whiskey with a My Father The Judge cigar. The rich vanilla and chocolate in the smoke would pair well with the chocolate in the whiskey.
