Resurgens Rye is a product of the ASW Distillery in Atlanta, Georgia. They use a mash bill of 100% malted rye, including 4% chocolate malted rye. It is double distilled in pot stills. It is barreled in 30 and 53 gallon barrels at a barrel entry proof of 110-115. After aging the whiskey, they use a slow method to proof the whiskey down to bottling proof and bottle it without filtration. I got a bottle the other day and Matt and I sat down and tasted it. Here are our tasting notes.
Resurgens Single Malt Rye
Proof: 86
Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, vanilla, peaches, blackberries, cardamom spice and oak wood.
- Matt: Rye grass, mint, vanilla, apricots, citrus and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Rye grass, vanilla, peaches, blackberries or maybe cherries, cardamom and white pepper spice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the peaches and blackberry are enhanced and the pepper becomes a black pepper. Tasted with a pecan and caramel and chocolate notes come forward.
- Matt: Vanilla, butterscotch, apricot, orange zest, mint and ginger with oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out cinnamon spice. The pecan brought out the flavor of a caramel buttercream cake.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood and white pepper spice and lingering cherry notes. The dried cranberry made the finish strong in black pepper with some peach notes. The pecan made the finish longer with oak, cardamom and lingering chocolate.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood, butterscotch and vanilla and lingering mint. The dried cranberry brought out some orange zest and cinnamon spice. The pecan made the finish longer with oak, butterscotch, mint and cinnamon spice.
I would pair this rye whiskey with a cigar that has lots of vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a NUB Habano cigar.
