Jeptha Creed Distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky, is family owned and grows their own Bloody Butcher Corn that they use to make their whiskeys. They recently sent this bottle to me, a new expression, that is 75% Bloody Butcher Corn, 20% Malted Wheat and 5% Malted Barley. They waited 6 years to release this expression because they wanted to make sure it was properly aged. Matt and I sat down to review this whiskey the other day and here are our tasting notes.

Jeptha Creed 6 Year Old Wheated Bourbon Whiskey

Proof: 93 Proof

Age: 6 years old

Nose:

  • Mike: Caramel, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, corn, latte and an earthy aroma.

Taste:

  • Mike: Caramel, ripe apples, white pepper and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the caramel is enhanced and the cranberry brings out a pear fruit flavor. Tasted with a pecan and the caramel becomes butterscotch and apples with a hint of hazelnut.
  • Matt: Caramel and Hershey cocoa powder. The dried cranberry enhanced the caramel and Hershey chocolate and brought out raspberries and cream. The pecan enhanced the caramel, chocolate, raspberries and cereal grains.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak wood and pepper. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with lingering apple and pear. The pecan made the finish long with oak, hazelnut and a hint of pepper.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and chocolate. The dried cranberry made the finish slightly sweeter with oak wood and chocolate. The pecan made the finish longer with oak and chocolate.

This very fine wheated Bourbon whiskey deserves to be paired with a My Father The Judge, a cigar that is rich with vanilla, chocolate and tobacco flavors.
