Buzzard’s Roost Distillery is located on Whiskey Row in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a small distillery who purchases new make whiskey and then re-distills it to make the whiskey that they bottle. They also have some sourced whiskey barrels that go into their products. The latter is the case with this product as it is a marriage of five- and seven-year old Bourbon finished in a second new, charred oak barrel. I was recently given a sample of this Bourbon and Matt and I sat down to taste it. Here are our tasting notes.

Buzzard’s Roost Double Oak Bourbon

Proof: 100

Age: Five Years Old

Nose:

Mike: Vanilla, caramel, apples, cinnamon and oak wood.

Matt: Caramel, pears, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood.

Taste:

Mike: Vanilla, caramel, apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the apple and nutmeg are enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and chocolate and pepper spice come forward.

Matt: Caramel, pears, cinnamon and oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out white pepper spice. The pecan made the pepper a black pepper.

Finish:

Mike: Long with oak wood caramel and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added nutmeg to the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, chocolate and pepper.

Matt: Medium long with oak wood and cinnamon. The dried cranberry made the finish long with oak wood and white pepper. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood and black pepper.

I would pair this fine Bourbon with a cigar with lots of cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a Nub Habana cigar.
