The other day, Matt and I took the Bourbon Tour at Oxmoor Farm. It was an excellent tour and very refreshing. It was not your typical Bourbon tour of a distillery, but instead a historical tour of the Bullitt family’s involvement with the distilling industry. They do, however, have a Bourbon label based upon a 1920 label created by the Bullitt family on the verge of Prohibition. It is a recreation of that label that they are using on the Oxmoor Bourbon they are bottling today. The Bourbon is a mixture of a traditional Bourbon and a wheat recipe Bourbon. They have non-disclosure agreements with the distilleries providing the whiskey, but the whiskey is bottled at Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood, Kentucky. I purchased a bottle at the end of the tour and Matt and I sat down and tasted it the other day. Here are our tasting notes.
Oxmoor Small Batch Bourbon
Proof: 119
Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Simple nose of vanilla, pepper and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, lemon cream, raspberries, rosewater and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, black pepper and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the black pepper is enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and caramel and chocolate come out and the pepper is reduced.
- Matt: Vanilla, lemon, raspberries, rosewater and oak wood. The dried cranberry made the lemon tart. The pecan brought out caramel, French vanilla and lemon.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak and black pepper. The dried cranberry made the finish very long and spicy with lots of black pepper. The pecan made the finish long with oak and chocolate with a touch of black pepper.
- Matt: Medium long with oak, cardamom and lingering vanilla. The dried cranberry brought out cayenne pepper spice. The pecan made the finish long with oak and lemon.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has lots of vanilla and caramel in the smoke. I would reach for an Esteli The Tabernacle cigar.
