The other day I picked up a couple of bottles of Sagamore Rye Whiskeys while out at Westport Whiskey and Wine. We loved both of them but particularly the Double Oak Rye whiskey. It is a marriage of a rye whiskey from Indiana and Maryland distilled rye whiskey. It was finished in a new charred barrel. The results are a sweet, caramel forward whiskey that we both loved and decided to make it the Whiskey of the Month for February. Here are our tasting notes.
Sagamore Double Oak Rye Whiskey

Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, vanilla, dates, apricots, baking spice and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, coffee with cream, red apples and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, apricots, cardamom and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and chocolate notes come out in the taste. Tasted with a pecan and it becomes rich in butterscotch.
- Matt: Caramel, coffee, apples, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry enhanced the caramel. The pecan enhanced the coffee notes.
Finish:
- Mike: Short and sweet with caramel and sweet oak wood. The dried cranberry added a note of chocolate to the finish. The pecan made the finish medium long with oak wood, butterscotch and white pepper.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and nutmeg. The dried cranberry added coffee to the finish. The pecan made the finish longer with oak wood, coffee and nutmeg.
I would pair this fine rye whiskey with a My Father Blue cigar. The dried fruit in the smoke would complement the fruit in the whiskey and enhance the caramel.
