Matt was out the other day and spotted this bottle of Maker’s Mark Lost Recipe Series and he had never seen it before. He texted me and neither had I. So he purchased a bottle. It is a bottle that uses a retired stave in their recipe. It has 3 baked American Pure 2, 4 Maker’s 46, and 3 Toasted French Mocha staves in the recipe. The Toasted French Mocha staves have been retired for several years now and it was a favorite stave to use in the mixture of the staves before it was retired. They give the whiskey a nice chocolate and coffee flavor that we like. We sat down to taste this whiskey the other day and here are our tasting notes.

Proof:110.9

Age: No Age Statement

Nose:

  • Mike: Vanilla, chocolate, apples, pepper and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, baked apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Vanilla, chocolate, apples, black pepper and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the chocolate and apple flavors are enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and the chocolate and pepper are enhanced.
  • Matt: Caramel, baked apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out lemon zest and coffee flavors to join the party. The pecan brought out black coffee and pipe tobacco in the flavor.

Finish:

  • Mike: Long and spicy with oak wood and pepper spice with lingering chocolate. The dried cranberry made the finish very fruity with oak wood and apple. The pecan made the finish very long with oak wood, chocolate and black pepper.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and cinnamon. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with oak wood and pipe tobacco. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, coffee and pipe tobacco.

I would pair this whiskey with a My Father The Judge cigar. The rich vanilla and chocolate in the smoke would complement the vanilla and chocolate in the whiskey.
