Once again, Michter’s has made a whiskey that is the best thing Matt and I tasted for the past month. Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash is an excellent whiskey that impressed us with its rich butterscotch flavor and well-rounded mouth feel. I have to say that Michter’s keeps making high quality whiskey and as long as they continue to do so, they will be whiskey of the month. Here are our tasting notes.
Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash
Proof: 86
Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Butterscotch, apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Butterscotch, apples, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the butterscotch is enhanced and a creamy mouth-feel comes forward. Tasted with a pecan and the orange zest and oak are enhanced and a bit of milk chocolate comes out.
- Matt: Caramel, apple, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a hint of maple syrup to the flavor. The pecan added butterscotch and a creamy mouth-feel.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, cinnamon and lingering orange zest. The dried cranberry made the finish sweet with butterscotch and a hint of oak wood. The pecan made the finish long and dry with oak wood, cinnamon and lingering orange zest.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added some maple syrup to the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood and nutmeg.
I would pair this fine whiskey with a Padron 1926 Series Maduro cigar. The rich vanilla and dried fruit flavors of the smoke would complement the butterscotch and apple in the whiskey.
