Lost Lantern is a rectifying company that purchases barrels of whiskey from many different distilleries and blends them into whiskeys that are unique because of the different flavor profiles created by these barrels. Matt and I have tasted some of their earlier whiskeys and rather enjoyed them. This meant that when they offered to send me a bottle of this latest whiskey — a Bourbon — I looked forward to getting it and reviewing the whiskey.

The Far-Flung Bourbon is a marriage of Bourbons from five different distilleries from across the United States. These barrels are from distilleries in Nevada, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Wisconsin and West Virginia. They have ages ranging from four to eight years old. The distilleries are Frey Ranch, Still Austin, Rock Town Distillery, Rich Grain Distillery (unfortunately closed), Wollersheim Distillery and Smooth Ambler, all of which have produced some very good whiskeys.  Matt and I sat down to taste this Bourbon the other day and here are our tasting notes.

Lost Lantern Far-Flung Bourbon III

Proof: 124.8

Age: Four Years Old

Nose

  • Mike: Caramel, milk chocolate, baking spices, apples and oak wood.
  • Matt: Caramel, brown sugar, cherries and oak wood.

Taste:

  • Mike: Caramel, apples, lemon zest, cardamom, ginger and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and red pepper flakes join the party. Tasted with a pecan and the caramel becomes a rich buttered caramel and the chocolate from the nose comes out.
  • Matt: Caramel, brown sugar, red pepper flakes and oak wood. The dried cranberry added coffee with cream to the flavor. The pecan enhanced the caramel and coffee flavors.

Finish:

  • Mike: Medium long with oak wood and spice. The dried cranberry made the finish long with oak wood, ginger and red pepper flakes. The pecan made the finish long and dry with oak wood, spice and lingering chocolate.
  • Matt: Medium long with oak wood and red pepper flakes. The dried cranberry made the finish longer. The pecan added coffee with cream notes to the finish.

I would pair this fine Bourbon with a My Father the Judge cigar. I think the rich vanilla and chocolate in the smoke would bring forward the chocolate in the Bourbon.
