I love the cocktails at Michter’s The Bar at Fort Nelson. They have six very talented mixologists working at the bar. They always change up the menu in the spring and the fall, creating new cocktails that are not only innovative, but very tasty. Rosemary and I always go there for the release of the new menu and we did just that the other day. We tried six of the eight cocktails on the menu and it so happened that we tasted a cocktail designed by each of the six mixologists. Here is what we tasted.
I started with the Something Blue cocktail. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Bourbon, Michter’s American whiskey, Blueberry Rooibos, Faretti Biscotti Liqueur, Foro Amaro, Sherry, Bitters, Green Chartreuse, and oats. It was tasty and complex with a blueberry flavor that was well balanced and not too sweet. Rosemary ordered a Rise and Shine cocktail. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Bourbon, Lemon, Honey, Pineapple, Amontillado Sherry, Ginger, Turmeric, Black Pepper and Absinthe. It was a balance of the fruit and spices, working very well together. It was a refreshing drink that would be satisfying on a warm summer day.

The next round was just as interesting. I ordered a Nectar of the Gods. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Sour Mash whiskey, Marti Dorado Rum, Sherry, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Maple Syrup, Horchata and whole Milk. It was toasty and sweet enough that I would consider this as a dessert cocktail. Rosemary ordered the Lotus Flower. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Rye whiskey, Thai Tea, Italian Vermouth, Italian Aperitivo, Fig Leaf, Cold Brew and Salted Cream Float and was served up in a Nick & Nora glass. This was another after-dinner cocktail that had a very nice coffee finish that I liked quite a bit.

We finished the evening with two last cocktails. I ordered The Bare Necessities. It is made with Michter’s US 1 Bourbon, Coconut Rum, Falernum, Lemon, Pineapple, Pepita Orgeat, Guava, Absinthe Mist, Bitters and Mint. I really enjoyed this cocktail. It had a nice coconut flavor that was not overpowering with a subtle note of chocolate. Rosemary ordered a Tokyo Time—the only non-whiskey cocktail we sampled— which is made with Crop Meyer Lemon Vodka, Los Siete Misterios Doba-Yej Mezcal, Matcha, Yuzu, French Aperitif, Lemon, Honey, Orange Bitters and Vanilla Coconut Yogurt. It was a tasty cocktail with a silky mouthfeel and nice smoky finish. There are two other new cocktails on the menu. They are called Island in the Sun and Enlighten Me. We opted not to try these last two cocktails as we felt we had had enough to drink for the evening. It gives us an excuse to return to The Bar at Fort Nelson on a later date. The Bar is our favorite cocktail bar in Louisville and I highly recommend it to any visitors to the city as well as locals looking for a good cocktail. Just remember to go online and make a reservation first, as they are always very busy.
