Mike And Matt Taste Maker’s Mark Private Selection Black Bourbon Society 2021 Selection

Several years ago, Samara B. Davis and her friends created the Black Bourbon Society. She and her co-founders love Bourbon and wanted to spread this love with like minds in the African-American community. She created the group and entered the social media world with it and the Black Bourbon Society has grown quickly. Just some of their activities include tasting events and barrel picks.

One of their barrel picks was a Maker’s Mark Private selection barrel that is very popular and has even won some awards at competitions. Fortunately, this selection was available at Westport Whiskey & Wine and Rosemary purchased a couple of bottles. Matt and I chose to review this whiskey and here are our notes.

Maker’s Mark Private Selection – Black Bourbon Society 2021 Selection

Age: No Age Statement

Stave Selection: 1 Baked American Pure, 2 Seared French Cuvee, 2 Maker’s Mark 46, 3 Roasted French Mendiant, 2 Toasted French Spice

Nose:

Mike: Chocolate, blackberry and raspberry fruit, a little cardamom spice and oak.
Matt: Chocolate and vanilla with raspberry, cardamom and oak.

Taste:

Mike: Caramel with spices – cardamom, allspice and white pepper and some sweet oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry brings out a lot of vanilla to join the party. Tasted with a pecan and citrus fruit and chocolate enter the room.
Matt: Lots of chocolate and caramel with a bit of sweet oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out notes of cherries and citrus fruit. The pecan brought out green apple, spice and vanilla.

Finish:

Mike: Medium long and dry with oak and spice. The dried cranberry made the finish oak and white pepper. The pecan made the finish very long with cardamom spice and chocolate.
Matt: Toasted vanilla and baking spices with a hint of oak. The dried cranberry brought out more oak and spice. The pecan made the finish long with vanilla, oak and spice.

I would pair this fine whiskey with a My Father The Judge cigar. This cigar is rich in chocolate notes in the smoke that would pair well with this whiskey as the whiskey will bring out a little more sweet spice in the smoke. Matt and I both really liked this whiskey. Good job Samara and crew as you picked a real winner of a recipe.
