This is the latest release of the Old ForesterWhiskey Row” series. It is different from the other versions in this series because they deeply charred a second barrel and finished the Bourbon in this second barrel. It is described as “deeply charred” because they char the barrel well past a number four char – almost to the point of causing the barrel to fall apart. This finishing of the whiskey does create some interesting flavors.

Old Forester 1910

Proof: 93

Age: No Age Statement

Nose: Caramel and fruit – prunes, dates and a hint of bananas with baking spices and oak. The oak and spice become heavier as it breathes. Let it breathe a while for the full flavor to come forward.

Taste: Caramel and fruit – prunes and dates with some nutmeg and allspice. Very much like a Christmas spice cookie. Tasted with a cranberry and the flavor has lass fruit and spice and more caramel and a hint of chocolate. Tasted with the pecan and the bananas come forward with more dry oak and chocolate.

Finish: Long and dry with oak and baking spices. The cranberry makes the finish sweeter but also shortens the finish. The pecan brings out the oak, making it very dry.

I decided to pair this with a Rocky Patel 2008 Autumn Collection cigar. I find the smoke very rich with tobacco and wood smoke with a hint of vanilla and cedar spice. The Bourbon makes the smoke sweeter with a hint of chocolate replacing the vanilla. The smoke makes the Bourbon full of chocolate and hazelnuts as well as the fruit and spice. An excellent pairing.
