Once again, Michter’s has won our whiskey of the month. This is one of the best ten year old whiskeys that we have tasted from Michter’s. I have to believe that this ten year old Bourbon was distilled at Michter’s Distillery in Shively, Kentucky and not a contract distilled whiskey. Their distillery is now ten years old and making fine whiskey. This would explain the flavor drift in a positive manner, but it could be just an exceptional batch of contract distilled Bourbon. In any case, it is a superior Bourbon. Matt and I sat down and tasted it the other day and here are our tasting notes.
Michter’s Ten Year Old Bourbon
Proof: 94.4
Age: Ten Years Old
Nose:
- Mike; Vanilla, caramel, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, butterscotch, ripe apples, baking spices and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, caramel, apples, apricots, cinnamon, nutmeg, and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the fruit is enhanced and the caramel becomes a rich butterscotch. Tasted with a pecan and a citrus note and black pepper comes forward to join the party.
- Matt: Caramel, butterscotch, orange cream, apple and oak wood. The dried cranberry added red pepper flakes to the taste. The pecan enhanced the caramel and orange cream.
Finish:
- Mike: Long with oak wood, caramel, cinnamon and lingering apple. The dried cranberry added apricot to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with oak wood, pepper and lingering caramel.
- Matt: Long with oak wood and orange cream. The dried cranberry added red pepper to the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, red pepper and lingering caramel.
I would pair this fine Bourbon with a cigar that has rich dried fruit and cedar spice. I would reach for a Rocky Patel Vintage 2008 Cameroon cigar.
