Liar’s Bench is a single barrel, barrel proof rye whiskey from Bear Wallow Distillery near Nashville, Indiana. This rye whiskey has a mash bill of 55% rye, 35% corn and 10% malted barley. It is aged in barrels from Kelvin Cooperage. I picked up a bottle of this rye whiskey when we visited the distillery a few months ago and Matt and I sat down to taste it the other day. Here are our tasting notes.
Liar’s Bench Single Barrel Rye Whiskey
Proof: 129.5
Age: No Age Statement
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, caramel, chocolate, prunes, plums, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, apples, charred orange zest, cedar and oak woods.
Taste:
- Mike: Rye grass, caramel, chocolate, plums, cinnamon and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the caramel and cinnamon are enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and orange zest and mint join the party.
- Matt: Caramel, apples, red pepper flakes and oak wood. The dried cranberry enhanced the caramel. The pecan added a hint of mint and enhanced the caramel.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, chocolate and cinnamon. The dried cranberry made the finish longer and enhanced the cinnamon in the finish. The pecan made the finish long with lingering orange zest and mint flavors.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and red pepper flakes. The dried cranberry made the finish longer. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, red pepper flakes and lingering caramel.
I would pair this rye whiskey with a cigar that has rich caramel and vanilla in the smoke. I would reach for a NUB Maduro cigar.
