The other day Steffani Scheurich stopped by the house to drop off two bottles of the latest edition of Lythgoe Bourbon, one for me and one for Matt. Steffani is the Master Blender for this brand and has done another excellent job with this whiskey. It is an eight year old Bourbon sourced from a Kentucky distillery (I am not saying who because I am not sure if they have a non-disclosure agreement). It is very good. Matt and I sat down to taste it the other day and here are our tasting notes.
Lythgoe Pauline’s Victory Bourbon
Proof: 90
Age: Eight Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, orange zest, raisins, baking spices and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, orange zest, cardamom, nutmeg and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and caramel comes forward with cinnamon spice. Tasted with a pecan, it brings out rich caramel toffee and orange zest.
- Matt: Vanilla, orange zest, raisins, smoked pepper and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a vanilla latte coffee flavor. The pecan brought out caramel.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, orange zest, nutmeg and lingering vanilla. The cranberry added cinnamon spice to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and sweet with oak wood and caramel toffee.
- Matt: Medium long and spicy with oak wood and black and red pepper. The dried cranberry enhanced the pepper. The pecan enhanced the oak wood and added lingering caramel.
I would pair this fine Bourbon with a cigar that has rich vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a My Father La Opulencia cigar.
