I was asked on the last blog why I did not taste the Heaven Hill Grain to Glass wheat recipe Bourbon in that blog. The answer is simple. They did not have any when I purchased the bottles we reviewed. I was out the other day and stopped in at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience and they had a bottle, so I purchased it. Matt and I sat down and tasted it the other day and here are our tasting notes.
Heaven Hill Grain to Glass Wheat Recipe Bourbon
Proof: 106.6
Age: Seven Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, marshmallows, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, cotton candy, plums, baking spices and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the vanilla becomes caramel. Tasted with a pecan and citrus and cardamom come out to join the caramel and apple.
- Matt: Vanilla, raisins, cardamom and oak wood. The dried cranberry enhanced the vanilla. The pecan brought out caramel and orange zest.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood and cinnamon. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with oak wood and caramel. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, cardamom and lingering caramel.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and cardamom. The dried cranberry brought out a citrus note in the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, cardamom and lingering caramel.
I would pair this fine Bourbon with a cigar that has vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a Padron 1926 Series cigar.
