A few weeks ago, I wrote about the collaboration between Liberty Pole and Dad’s Hat distilleries and the rye that they bottled together. It is a single barrel of rye whiskey from each distillery, mingled together to create this whiskey. I can taste both distillery’s whiskeys in this whiskey. They sent me a 100 ml sample bottle of the whiskey for Matt and I to review. Here are our tasting notes.
Liberty Pole and Dad’s Hat Collaboration Rye
Proof: 119.6
Age: No Age Statement (Four years seven month Liberty Pole and six years, four month Dad’s Hat)
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, vanilla, citrus and oak wood.
- Matt: Rye grass, caramel, citrus and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, citrus, cinnamon, and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and wild berries and black pepper come out. Tasted with a pecan the caramel becomes a rich butter caramel and a note of milk chocolate comes out.
- Matt: Rye grass, caramel, orange zest, cinnamon, pine and oak wood. The dried cranberry added blackberry and made the orange a tart orange flavor. The pecan added a note of chocolate to the flavors.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, citrus and cinnamon spice. The dried cranberry made the finish spicy with oak wood and black pepper. The pecan added lingering chocolate to the finish.
- Matt: Medium long with rye grass, oak wood, caramel and orange. The dried cranberry enhanced the orange in the finish. The pecan enhanced the rye grass in the finish.
I would pair this fine whiskey with a cigar that has lots of vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a Don Pepin Garcia Original cigar.
