This is the latest release from Brown-Forman’s Old Forester 117 Series which is their 1910 Bourbon aged a second time in a second, new charred barrel and this particular Bourbon has spent a long time in the second barrel. It gives the Bourbon a wood forward flavor but does not quite have a bitter tannic flavor. It is a decent Bourbon that was a limited release. We recently purchased this whiskey and Matt and I sat down to taste it the other day and here are our tasting notes.
Old Forester, The 117 Series, 1910 Extra, Extra Old Bourbon
Proof: 93
Age: No Age statement.
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, wild berries, baking spices and lots of oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, honey, wild berries, a floral note and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, raspberries, blackberries, cinnamon and lots of oak. Tasted with a dried cranberry and a citrus note and cherries come out to join the party. Tasted with a pecan and chocolate comes forward.
- Matt: Caramel, blackberries and lots of oak wood. The dried cranberry added a note of cherries or raspberries. The pecan added a chocolate and peanut note.
Finish:
- Mike: Long with oak wood, cinnamon and lingering caramel. The dried cranberry added lingering citrus to the finish. The pecan made the finish very long with oak wood, chocolate and cinnamon.
- Matt: Long with oak and tobacco. The dried cranberry added lingering blackberry. The pecan added lingering chocolate.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has a lot of vanilla and dried fruit notes in the smoke. I would reach for a My Father Le Bijou 1922 cigar.
