I like the whiskeys being made at Kentucky Artisan Distillery, in Crestwood, Kentucky. Jade Peterson is a very talented distiller and it really shows in the Whiskey Row brand. This is the latest expression of the brand. It is called “Triple Wood” because they start the aging in traditional oak barrels. They then age it in Ximenez Sherry casks, before finishing it again in cognac casks. It makes the Bourbon quite fruity and I like a fruity Bourbon. I picked up a bottle of the Triple Wood the other day when I was at the distillery and Matt and sat down to taste it the other day. Here are our tasting notes.
Whiskey Row Triple Wood Bourbon
Proof: 90
Age: No Age Statement.
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, corn, pears, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, honeysuckle, pears, black pepper and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, corn, pears, raisins, cardamom spice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and black pepper spice comes forward. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla becomes a rich caramel with raisins, black pepper and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, sweet caramel, black pepper, cinnamon and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a strawberry and cream flavor. The pecan enhanced the caramel and spices.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood and cardamom spice. The dried cranberry made the spice black pepper. The pecan made the finish longer with oak wood, black pepper and lingering notes of raisins.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood, brown sugar and black pepper. The dried cranberry added lingering notes of strawberries. The pecan added cinnamon spice to the finish.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has a lot of vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a Rocky Patel Decade cigar.
