A while back, Rosemary and I had lunch at the Jeptha Creed Distillery restaurant. While there, I picked up a couple of bottles of their whiskey – a six year old wheat recipe Bourbon and a distillery shop pick single barrel reserve. They are both excellent whiskeys and Matt and I sat down to taste them. Here are our tasting notes.
Jeptha Creed Six Year Old Wheat Recipe Bourbon
Proof: 93
Age: Six Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, leather and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, chocolate, cinnamon and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, cinnamon, leather and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry brings out a citrus note. Tasted with a pecan and notes of chocolate and ginger join the party.
- Matt: Caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, mint and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a note of cherries and enhanced the caramel. The pecan made the Bourbon a sweet candy with lots of chocolate and caramel.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak and leather. The dried cranberry added a lingering apple note. The pecan made the finish longer and spicier with oak wood and ginger spice.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood, chocolate and mint. The dried cranberry added some lingering cherry notes. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, chocolate and cherries.
Jeptha Creed Single Barrel Reserve
Proof: 124.81
Age: Seven Years, Three Months
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, caramel, pears, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, rose water, cedar, black pepper and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry made the cinnamon a red hot candy. The pecan brought out some ginger spice.
- Matt: Vanilla, black pepper and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a citrus note to the taste. The pecan made the vanilla a rich caramel and added a note of cedar wood.
Finish:
- Mike: Long with oak wood and spice. The dried cranberry made it very spicy with lots of cinnamon red hot candy. The pecan made it very long with oak and ginger spice.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and black pepper. The dried cranberry added some lingering citrus notes. The pecan added some lingering cedar wood.
I would pair these fine Bourbons with a Rocky Patel Decade cigar. The rich tobacco and cedar spice in the smoke would pair well with the leather and spice in the Bourbons.
