David E. Rye is the product of Hidden Still Spirits of Hershey, Pennsylvania. The brand is named for the founder, David E. Stein. This is a rye whiskey finished in Brazilian amburana rum casks. They sent me a bottle the other day and Matt and I sat down to taste it. Here are our tasting notes.
David E. Dois Barris Rye Finished in Brazilian Amburana Rum Casks
Proof:100
Age: Three Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, plums, apricots, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Rye grass, apricots, cinnamon, brown sugar and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Rye grass, vanilla, brown sugar, apricots, allspice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the apricot is joined by some plums. Tasted with a pecan and citrus and cardamom come out to play with the other flavors.
- Matt: Rye grass, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a caramel note to the taste. The pecan enhanced the rye grass and the cinnamon.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak, brown sugar, apricot and allspice. The dried cranberry enhanced the brown sugar. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with oak wood and allspice.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added lingering brown sugar. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with lots of cinnamon.
I would pair this rye whiskey with a cigar that has a lot of vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a NUB Habano.
