The other day Bardstown Bourbon Company sent me a sample bottle of their latest release in their Origin Series – a high wheat Bourbon. This Bourbon had a mash bill of 53% corn, 39% wheat and 8% malted barley. It was aged for six years and bottled at 106 proof. Matt and I sat down and tasted this Bourbon the other day and here are our tasting notes.
Bardstown Bourbon Company Origin Series High Wheat Bourbon
Proof: 106
Age: Six Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Butterscotch, apples, baking spices, oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel, cinnamon, hazelnuts, sweet oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, caramel, apples, white pepper and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and wild berries and cinnamon come out to join the party. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla becomes a rich French vanilla and cardamom spice joins the party.
- Matt: Caramel, hazelnuts, cinnamon, oak wood. The dried cranberry added a coffee note. The pecan made the caramel a toffee and added coffee.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood, caramel and white pepper. The dried cranberry added cinnamon to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with oak wood, and cardamom.
- Matt: Medium long with oak wood, hazelnuts and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added coffee to the finish. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood, coffee and cinnamon.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has a lot of vanilla in the smoke. I would reach for a My Father Le Bijou cigar.
