I recently received a bottle of Blue Run Trifecta Bourbon. This is a fairly expensive whiskey and that is my one complaint about the brand. It has a nice package that looks a lot like a perfume bottle on a larger scale. It is a six year old whiskey blended with some older whiskey and bottled at barrel proof, but that is still expensive at the $180.00 price tag. I would like to see this whiskey at a lower price. Matt and I sat down to taste this Bourbon and here are our tasting notes.
Blue Run Trifecta Bourbon
Proof: 117.1
Nose:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Vanilla, spun sugar, strawberries, pears and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, pears, ginger, allspice, oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the ginger is enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla becomes a rich caramel and the allspice and oak wood are enhanced.
- Matt: Vanilla cola, pears, ripe apple, cinnamon and oak wood. The dried cranberry added some lemon zest to the taste. The pecan made the vanilla a rich caramel and added some berry notes and red pepper flakes to the spice.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak and baking spices. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with oak and ginger spice. The pecan made the finish long and dry with oak and allspice.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added some citrus notes to the finish. The pecan made the finish long and spicy with oak, red pepper flakes and lingering berry notes.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has vanilla and rich tobacco notes in the smoke. I would reach for a NUB Maduro cigar.
