April 8, 2024 is a day of total eclipse across parts of America. The path of totality passes quite near the Casey Jones Distillery in western Kentucky and they decided to release a Bourbon dedicated to the occasion. It is a 75% corn, 10% wheat, 10% rye, 5% malted barley mash bill, bottled at three years old and at 100 proof. Matt and I got a bottle the other day and sat down to taste it. Here are our tasting notes.
Casey Jones Total Eclipse Bourbon
Proof: 100
Age: Three Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Corn, vanilla, a little black pepper and oak wood.
- Matt: Cornbread, chocolate, mint, oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Vanilla, corn, green apple, black pepper, oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the green apple and pepper are enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and the vanilla and the oak are enhanced.
- Matt: Chocolate, mint, coffee beans and oak wood. The dried cranberry brought out some pear fruit. The pecan enhanced the chocolate and the coffee beans.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood and pepper spice. The dried cranberry added some lingering green apple notes. The pecan made the finish very long and dry with oak and lingering vanilla.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and coffee. The dried cranberry added a little lingering mint to the finish. The pecan made the finish longer with coffee and chocolate.
I would pair this Bourbon with a Padron 1964 Anniversary cigar. It is a special occasion to experience an eclipse and it deserves a special cigar.
