Bardstown Bourbon Company has created the Discovery Series to showcase their talent of blending whiskey. This expression has complex beginnings and is the marriage of 62% 9 year old Kentucky Bourbon, 18% 13 year old Kentucky Bourbon, 10% 10 year old Georgia Bourbon, 8% 6 year Kentucky Bourbon and 2% 10 year Tennessee Bourbon. The Georgia Bourbon has a mash bill recipe that includes both rye and wheat grains. All this information can be found on the label.
I was sent a bottle of this whiskey and Matt and I sat down to taste it. Here are our tasting notes.
Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #10 Bourbon
Proof: 114.24
Age: Blend of 6 Year Old, 9 Year Old, 10 Year Old and 13 Year Old Whiskeys
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Cherrywood, almond butter, sarsaparilla, and bitter orange peel.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, nutmeg, cardamom and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry brings out citrus and oak. Tasted with a pecan and apples and chocolate come out.
- Matt: Orange, vanilla and cream soda. The dried cranberry brought out vanilla, orange and cardamom. The pecan brought out flavors of oil, chocolate and oak.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak wood and spice. The dried cranberry made the finish longer with oak, spice and citrus. The pecan made the finish long with oak wood and lingering chocolate.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and cardamom spice. The dried cranberry enhanced the oak and cardamom. The pecan enhanced the oak and brought out tobacco notes.
I would pair this whiskey with a My Father Le Bijou 1922 Grand Robusto cigar. The full-bodied cigar with cocoa and cedar spice in the smoke should complement the caramel and fruit of the whiskey.
