This whiskey is made at Ted Huber’s Starlight Distillery in Starlight Indiana and is a small batch Rye whiskey finished in a second oak barrel. I have nothing but respect for the Ted Huber Family’s distilling abilities and they make great whiskeys and fruit brandies. This rye is no exception. We picked up a bottle of it at Huber’s for review and Matt and I sat down and tasted it. Here are our tasting notes.
Starlight Old Rickhouse Double Oaked Rye

Age: 4 and 1/2 Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, caramel, lemon and orange citrus, citrus zest and oak wood.
- Matt: Lemon, rye grass, citrus zest and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, rye grass, lemon zest cardamom and oak. Tasted with a dried cranberry brings out cinnamon and the caramel is enhanced. Tasted with a pecan enhances the rye grass and gives a hint of buttered toffee and cardamom.
- Matt: Rye grass, Lemonhead Candy, Sour Tongue Tinglers Candy. The dried cranberry brought out more lemon flavor, rye and oak. The pecan brought out more caramel, lemon doughnut and oak.
Finish:
- Mike: Long with oak, lemon and rye grass. The dried cranberry made the finish oaky and brought out cinnamon notes. The pecan made the finish longer with oak and cardamom and lingering toffee.
- Matt: Medium long with oak, cayenne, ginger, nutmeg and lingering brown sugar sweetness. The dried cranberry made the finish very spicy with cayenne pepper jelly, ginger and oak wood. The pecan brought out a note of tobacco, with oak and ginger.
I would pair this Rye whiskey with a NUB Maduro cigar. The rich vanilla and caramel of the smoke would pair well with the caramel and spice in the rye whiskey.
