Jeptha Creed Distillery is in Shelbyville, Kentucky. They are famous for their farm to bottle Bloody Butcher Corn Bourbon. They have expanded this mash bill a little by adding white and blue corn to their mash bill when making this whiskey. They are using 25% Bloody Butcher Red Corn, 25% Heirloom White Corn, 25% Bruce’s Blue Corn, 20% Malted Rye and 5% Malted Barley in Making this Bourbon. They are also donating part of the profits from the sales of the Bourbon to a local veterans group. It is very good Bourbon. Matt and I sat down to taste it and here are our tasting notes.
Jeptha Creed Red, White, and Blue Corn Straight Bourbon
Proof: 100
Age: Four Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, orange peel, lemon, peppery spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel and vanilla cream, apples and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, lemon and orange zest, white pepper spice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the pepper becomes a black pepper and the orange zest comes forward. Tasted with a pecan and a note of milk chocolate comes out and the caramel becomes a rich, buttery caramel.
- Matt: Chocolate, caramel, vanilla, ripe apple and oak wood. The dried cranberry gave it a vanilla latte coffee note. The pecan brought out notes of blackberries, sweet corn and rich caramel.
Finish:
- Mike: Medium long with oak and pepper. The dried cranberry added a lingering citrus note to the finish. The pecan made the finish very long with oak, pepper and lingering milk chocolate.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and dark fruit. The dried cranberry added a buttery toffee lingering in the finish. The pecan made the finish very long with oak, buttery toffee and lingering blackberry.
I would pair this Bourbon with a cigar that has vanilla and cedar spice in the smoke. I would reach for a Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic cigar.
