This is a bottle of New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon picked by The Bourbon Society. I purchased this bottle at the 2022 Repeal Day event held by The Bourbon Society. They pick some very good barrels and this Bourbon is no exception. Matt and I sat down and tasted it the other day and here are our tasting notes.
New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon, The Bourbon Society Barrel
Proof: 111.3
Age: Four Years, Three Months, Twenty-four Days
Nose:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, baking spices and oak wood.
- Matt: Caramel. oak wood – fresh cut wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Caramel, apples, cinnamon. Allspice and oak wood. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the apple is enhanced and nutmeg spice comes forward. Tasted with a pecan and the caramel is enhanced and a note of chocolate comes forward.
- Matt: Caramel, apple and oak wood. The dried cranberry made the apple a Red Delicious Apple and added pepper spice. The pecan enhanced the caramel and black pepper.
Finish:
- Mike: Long with oak and cinnamon spice. The dried cranberry added nutmeg spice to the finish. The pecan made the finish very long with oak and lingering chocolate and caramel.
- Matt: Medium long with oak and pepper spice. The dried cranberry made the spice a spicy red pepper flake. The pecan made the finish very long with oak and black pepper.
I would pair this fine Bourbon with a Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial cigar. The vanilla and cedar spice of the smoke would pair well with the caramel and spice of the Bourbon.
