Huber’s Starlight Distillery in Indiana is a favorite place to visit. Matt was there recently and saw this bottle in the gift shop. He purchased it, brought it over and we tasted this rye whiskey. Here are our tasting notes.
Starlight Old Rickhouse Double-oaked Rye
Proof: 106
Age: Four Years Old
Nose:
- Mike: Rye grass, caramel, prunes and oak wood.
- Matt: Rye grass, vanilla, marshmallows, chai tea and oak wood.
Taste:
- Mike: Rye grassiness, caramel, prunes, cinnamon and oak tannins. Tasted with a dried cranberry and the cinnamon and oak tannins are enhanced. Tasted with a pecan and a note of milk chocolate comes out.
- Matt: Rye grass, vanilla, marshmallow and oak wood. The dried cranberry added a note of sour cherries. The pecan gave it flavors of vanilla, cherries and red hot cinnamon candy.
Finish:
- Mike: Long and dry with oak tannins and cinnamon. The dried cranberry added more oak tannins to the finish. The pecan made the finish very dry with lots of oak tannins and pepper spice.
- Matt: Very hot with mint and oak tannins. The dried cranberry enhanced the oak tannins. The pecan gave the finish the flavor of hot, spiced coffee and oak wood.
I would pair this rye whiskey with my pipe. I think the fruit and vanilla of my favorite Kremer’s Black Royal pipe tobacco would complement this rye whiskey very well.
